Scallion Braised Tofu Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 block firm tofu (about 400g), cut into cubes
  • 4-5 scallions, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup water or broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for thickening)

Steps

  1. Prepare the tofu: Drain the tofu and cut into 1-2 inch cubes. Pat dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

  2. Fry the tofu: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a wok or large pan over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and fry until golden on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and set aside.

  3. Cook the scallions: In the same pan, add the remaining oil. Add minced garlic if using, and stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the chopped scallions and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until they start to soften.

  4. Add seasonings: Stir in soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, salt, and pepper. Mix well.

  5. Braise the tofu: Return the fried tofu to the pan. Add water or broth. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  6. Thicken the sauce: Stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens.

  7. Serve: Garnish with additional scallions if desired. Serve hot with rice.

Notes

  • This dish is flavorful and goes well with steamed rice.
  • Adjust seasonings to taste.
  • For a vegetarian version, ensure oyster sauce is vegetarian.
