Scallion Braised Tofu Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 block firm tofu (about 400g), cut into cubes
- 4-5 scallions, chopped
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon oyster sauce (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 cup water or broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for thickening)
Steps
-
Prepare the tofu: Drain the tofu and cut into 1-2 inch cubes. Pat dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
-
Fry the tofu: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a wok or large pan over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and fry until golden on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and set aside.
-
Cook the scallions: In the same pan, add the remaining oil. Add minced garlic if using, and stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the chopped scallions and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until they start to soften.
-
Add seasonings: Stir in soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
-
Braise the tofu: Return the fried tofu to the pan. Add water or broth. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
-
Thicken the sauce: Stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens.
-
Serve: Garnish with additional scallions if desired. Serve hot with rice.
Notes
- This dish is flavorful and goes well with steamed rice.
- Adjust seasonings to taste.
- For a vegetarian version, ensure oyster sauce is vegetarian.
